What is the difference between prepared and unprepared for a (Business) conversation?
I believe everyone can relate to how frustrating that is to speak with someone at work that he/she seems to be never on the same page and used an hour or more to try to explain the situation. What makes it even worse is that when the conversation is finished, he/she seems to still be confused or not following the point of the whole conversation.
Today we are not talking about why the person is not cooperating, we are talking about delivering a message and driving into conclusion as quickest as possible. When I first in my Sale life, I am fortunate to land on a company with an open mindset and allow myself to chit-chat with basically everyone in the company (Yes, including our bosses). I always treasure the little chit-chat moment with our Boss Denzik as he seems to be always busy and having more serious matters to attend to than talking with me.
Therefore, I always have this self-pressure mind to approach him. Although with the pressure, I feel like he is resourceful to me and often can provide insight to me. I didn’t shy from the opportunity given and instead, I prepare myself that “What exactly do I want to ask” or “What result do I expect from him”.
At the very beginning, I am nervous to approach him as I wonder if I am wasting his time. Initially, I am expressing my thoughts and feelings here and there in my work stuff. He then replied, “So okay. What about it then?” I stopped there and I was silent. The conversation ended awkwardly and he moved on to the next agenda on his packed daily schedule. Therefore, to make sure the conversation (If happens) will arrive somewhere instead of just “Expressing my feelings”.
